Hey there....
Its been a while and I have so much to talk about.
Julia Howard :)
The Liberal Arts
Leadership Education
My LDS Mission
Spirituality
Travel
Ambition (Im excited about this one.)
So I suppose Ill start at the start.
Who is Julia Howard? A 5'7 brown eyed beauty. And my best friend in the entire world. I just returned from a short stay with her family and had the most refreshing weekend since... Elevation in April.
We stayed up for hours a day just talking. Spending time with each other. Basking in the blessings that our mutual school, Williamsburg Academy, has provided us: quality friends, similar interests and the same values.
Her family was incredible and made me feel at home. Her brothers became my friends and her sister even hugged me in the end! :)
I felt empty as I walked through Hobby Airport to board my plane. A piece of me had just been taken away. Or rather... I left it. But alas. Life goes on. And life is good. But I have a feeling Ill be seeing more of Miss Howard in the future. :)
The Liberal Arts. Something I was, probably by divine nature, made passionate. I wasnt always homeschooled but I have always been fascinated with history, philosophy, speaking, writing and languages.
And at Williamsburg that fascination turned into a burning love. And that fire still burns. It isn't easy being an artist in a world of trainees.
The older I get the more liberal I find my personal and interpersonal beliefs. I value equality, authenticity, spirituality, and circles. Not squares. I believe in being different. And embracing that difference. (But trust me, if you spout the words democracy, executive orders or change and hope.... I wont join you for a nice friendly political chat.)
I believe that the world will come crashing down sometime in my generations prime. I will have to pick up the pieces of a broken society and rebuild it. And heres what I think. Math and Science aren't worth crap when you're a leader. We have become so square, so technical, and so career driven since the tech boom of the mid 20th century that we fail to see the importance of the liberal arts.
I think everybody should be able to do a math problem and describe the difference between shale and sandstone. But lets think about something for a second.
When do civilizations fall? It starts with a lack of morality and a growth in overindulgence. Think the roarin' twenties.
At the same time, people spend less time getting and education and more time gaining job training because why? They want money so they can spend it on frivolous things.
So we have less morality, and less education, but an increase in money. Which is a false sense of security. Real security comes from family (morals) and the ability to think (education; not job training)
With this false sense of security, we do stupid things with our money and after 10- 20 years there is a crash. Think 1929.
The people lack morality and education and now they lack any security so what do they do? Elect those who they believe will give them back that security. And in doing so, they trade their freedom for this security they are so desperate for.
This all applies very well to the 1920s and 30s. But, dear reader, it applies right now.
We spent the 1980's and 90's entertaining ourselves. Education went out of the window. (Or was it ever there?) Job training and a good career became the most important thing in our parents generation. And morality? Ha!! Yeah right.
And in 2009 we suffered the worse economic crash since the great depression. With our lack of education we have elected leaders who promise security and in doing so, take away our freedom. And because we are only trained... we do not see that it will lead to a fall of society as we have known it.
I see people on TV stockpiling guns, gas masks and canned food. Which I think is a very smart thing. But I think we also need to be stockpiling our knowledge. We need to learn how to think. Its our turn Generation X. We have to spend the precious time we have learning the Liberal Arts and HOW TO THINK. Because the world *will* need leaders. And when it gets so bad that they want more than security, they will have very few good leaders to choose from.
Careers are great. College is... fairly important. But education is everything. So think about that. Think about what you believe truth is. Find your path that The Creator is willing to lead you down. And find your purpose.
Because trust me: We live and grow up in a choice time, God has a mission for you, and we are still stuck in a relic of the past. College, Jobs, Money and Security are old words that belong to our parents. And they made a great go at it. I love them for the comfy life they gave us.
But now its our turn to find the words that will define us. I hope they are something like Family, Freedom, God and a true Liberal Arts Education.
Okay. I have to go teach classes at one of the best schools in the world: Williamsburg. Ill continue this later.
